Why I started Made in the Valley...

Gail Lara

There were so many times I thought to myself; "Today is it, I'm going to start my own business" only to allow the fear of failure to set in and alter my plans for another day, month or year. The thought of starting my own business was frightening. It would mean I would have to examine my strengths and weaknesses, my personal goals. Growing up I was taught that it was best to settle for a job with benefits and stick with it for better or worse. However, after working for corporate companies over the years, it was clear to me that I had hit the glass ceiling.

Then one day it came to me. What I wanted to do was to help other women start their own businesses. My preparation was really the culmination of my many professional experiences as a buyer, sales and purchasing manager, and the success I'd had implementing programs to create better efficiencies. When I recognized my talents for creating unique new products, I thought, "why not create a way for other women to sell... and give a portion of the proceeds to a worthy cause?"

Forcing myself to overcome my fears and embrace my experiences as lessons that prepared me for this challenge, helped me to implement what I knew would work. I also suddenly realized how strong I really am; what substance I'm made of.

"Success comes when you believe in yourself first, so that others may follow"

Fundraising for any reason is hard. My daughters are a testament to that. I remember their excitement when they both made the high school volleyball team. The two sisters playing together was a sight to behold. But what wasn’t such a pretty sight, were the three year old recycled uniforms they were given to wear.

Unlike boys’ sports teams, girls’ athletic endeavors are often under resourced. So my daughters set about fundraising for new uniforms by selling candy for two months, but they didn’t feel good about selling unhealthy junk food to raise the funds. As a parent who’s always been... read more
