San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission

The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission was launched nearly 10 years ago to provide refuge, recovery and restoration to the poor and homeless living in the Valley. Annually the Mission provides nearly: 73,000 hot meals, 22,000 nights of shelter, 8,000 hot showers, and thousands of articles of clothing, counseling, job placement services, and much more. One of the most essential services the Mission provides to the community is emergency shelter for homeless families.

More ↓

Typically 50% of the guests who stay at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission are children 12 years of age and younger. To be effective, the Mission had to become mobile as well, taking homeless social services to where the homeless congregate. Currently hot showers, hot meals, referrals, and counseling services are provided daily. The objective of the Mission’s mobile outreach program is to provide life essential services to homeless individuals living on the streets. www.sanfernandovalleyrescuemission.org

Founded in 1977, Sojourn provides a safe space where women and children can regroup, rebuild, and reestablish their self-esteem and lives. This diverse program serves women and children of all classes, cultures, and religions, regardless of economic circumstances, physical and mental disabilities or immigration status—including those who are traditionally underserved, such as lesbians, the elderly, prostitutes, those who are HIV-positive women, and those who are substance-dependent. Sojourn fosters solidarity among women and children, educates the community and society about homelessness and abuse, and is committed to effecting political and social change through grassroots activism and a philosophy of individual empowerment.

All residents of Sojourn’s two shelters (crisis and transitional) are provided with comprehensive, culturally appropriate case management, which includes clinical therapy for women and children and assistance in securing transitional or permanent housing. Non-residential services are provided at Sojourn’s business office and other sites in the community.

Sojourn believes that in order to respond effectively to victims of domestic violence, programs must be comprehensive and address the complexity of domestic violence, the range of victim's experiences, and the needs of diverse groups. While primarily found among African Americans, sickle cell disease is also present among Greeks, Italians, Latinos, Hispanics, Asiatic Indians, and in Mediterranean populations.
