My mother was my best friend throughout childhood; guiding, watching, and helping me grow. Working full time and raising three kids proved challenging everyday.
One of the most valuable ideas she had was utilizing the free time we had together. Every Friday my family would pack dinner and head to the beach to relax and watch fireworks. It was through family beach day that I realized the most precious gift in life is time. Having been raised in Hawaii the diverse population and culture were ubiquitous. It always felt like I was part of a big Ohana (family) in my community.
When my brother was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome it took many years of research and patience to understand the world through his eyes. Every child is unique and my mother inspired me to use the gift of time and incorporate every child in the process.
I love working with children; their voice is just as important as ours if we could only listen and learn. Children share an innocence that reminds me of the simple joys that are all too often overshadowed by our busy schedules.
The Thinking Spot was designed to aide in administering a discipline that is both consistent and functional with my brother. The use of time to discover his feelings helped him manage his anger and develop self control. It wasn’t until he stopped me, in the middle of an argument, that I realized we all need time to think things through and process.
